Not every human being will become a CEO, and not every human being will become an Employee.
It’s however worthy of note that being an Employee is in itself very important, in that, whoever a CEO is, needs you to achieve his vision.
Yet again, as important as an employee may be, it is cheap to be a mere employee.
This may may sound disappointing to someone, but please continue reading as I explain further.
I mean if all you do is to execute the roles outlined on your Job Description (JD), and receive your salary at the end of a period, as agreed upon in your contract, then you are living as a mere employee.
I explain some more. We have reached an era, and age, in the world of work, where almost every humanbeing (even less than 18 years) can do some work.
An employee must go the extra mile to become a blessing to their employer and organization.
A few months ago, I shared with my Team Leads and Field Workers during one of my meetings with them, that employers are no longer looking for hard workers only, because everybody can work hard, even lazy people can work hard sometimes. I emphasized that employers are now on the look out for RELIABLE people.
What makes the difference is not the one who works hard, but the one the organization can count on at all times, especially in crucial moments; that employee who can be entrusted with the organization’s valuables; the worker who will approach work with the attitude of good stewardship; as though the organization was his own.
It must be noted however, that this does not downplay the place of being a hardworker, only that, in this era, it is not all about who is working hard. We need more of the “Soft Skills” too.
An outstanding employee is one who is a Blessing to his employer, and the organization.
I refer to ‘blessing’ in this setting as a source of glad tidings, a bringer of extraordinary results, and a constant seeker of Grace for the flourishing of the organization, as Joseph did to Portiphar’ house, and the economy of Egypt.
Colossians 3:23 (KJV) says “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;”
Now, this explains why it is dangerous to work in an organization where your heart is not with. Your presence in there would only be for money to sustain yourself, and not what value you genuinely want to add to the organization. In the passage of time, you might not even be perturbed if any scathe befalls the firm. This will subsequently lead to the development and nurturing of an awry approach towards organizational goals, and render the employee in question harmful to the organization, though he may even be the most hardworking staff.
